The Kaw Nation is pleased to recognize Acting Attorney General John Tyler “JT” Hammons, who was elected by Kaw citizens during the Quarterly General Council Meeting on July 12, 2026.

A sixth-generation Oklahoman and an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation, Hammons is a founding partner of Hammons Hamby & Price, a law firm that serves governmental clients throughout eastern Oklahoma. His career has been defined by public service and a longstanding commitment to tribal, municipal and regional government.

Hammons previously served as the 47th mayor of the City of Muskogee, completing two terms from 2008 through 2012. Following law school, he served the Cherokee Nation as an assistant attorney general from 2015 to 2017. Since founding his firm in 2017, he has held several public-service roles, including general counsel to the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation, special counsel for the Cherokee Nation Real Estate Services Department, chief judge for the City of Muskogee, and city attorney for Bixby, McAlester and Tahlequah.

He is admitted to practice before all Oklahoma state and federal courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and the courts of the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek) and Choctaw Nations.
